Pat, MikeC and myself made the climb up to the Mill Creek Summit. Tony and his wife were there. So was Jeff from Rosamond. Kevin Walsh and Curly made it too. There were a lot of riders that made the climb. With the 60 mph gusts the ride was not easy but we made it. At the summit Bicycle John’s had pork sandwiches for everyone that needed food.
Once we reached the summit I took off all my sweaty riding gear and changed into dry stuff. That helped for a little while. Eventually the cold temp and wind got me. I heard a guy say that a photographer told him the temp was 39 and had just dropped to 37. With the wind chill it had to be in the 20’s. Pat got in Mike G’s Yukon to warm up. After a while I got in too to just get out of the wind.
MikeC wrapped himself in a blanket. I put on almost everything I had and was still cold.
Around 2:00 the first solo racer came by followed by a chase group. About 3 minutes back was the peloton.
After watching the racers fly up the mountain we sped down hill back to Acton and that was it.
All in all it was fun and cold. I would call this an epic ride. Maybe even a classic ride due to the conditions. Pics coming up on Flickr tomorrow.
I just read that Sheldon Brown died. That sucks. He replied to a convoluted email I sent him once. If you’re into bikes you’ve probably heard of him. Like him or not the man knew bikes.
The Tour of California is coming. To make things even better than last year (had to drive to see the race) I will be able to ride up to the Mill Creek Summit and watch the peloton cruise on by. A few members of the HDC are planning on riding up to watch the race. Count me in. The best part? I can ride from my house to the summit! Sweet!
I hate being sick. I picked up a sinus bug and now I have a minor problem. It won’t stop me from riding on Sunday before the Super Bole Weevil. Our neighbors are hosting a party so I am digging that news.
I hooked up twitter for those that know such things. If you’re not up to speed yet check it out.
