Damn!
The 4th and final race of the Urban Cyclocross Series was held at the Palos Verdes Running Course on Dec. 14th, 2008. I made it to 3 of the 4 races and battled it out in the Singlespeed A category on my trusty Bianchi San Jose. The final field consisted of just 4 racers. Noah Holcomb and Coley King were sure to leave me in the dust like usual and I hoped to battle it out for 3rd with Jack Linquist. At the start the usual happened and Noah and Coley were quickly out of site. Jack passed me on the climb. After jumping over the barrier and crossing a small creek Jack’s shoe broke and ended his race on the first lap. I was kinda chapped. We had a good race going in the series opener when I flatted on lap 2. This was our chance to get down and a mechanical ended it. I kept on going and didn’t get lapped by either Coley or Noah! This unfortunate occurrence happened in race #2 of the series and I was not about to let it happen again. I rode steady and didn’t blow up. I really fought back the urge to go too hard for a change and it worked. I finished and didn’t feel too bad at the end. Afterwards I got my picture snapped on the podium and headed home.
For the series I ended up in 3rd place on points. Not too bad for an oldie racing the young bloods! Next year I hope more people show up so we can really duke it out in the SS category.
I did it. I promoted the 11th race of the SoCalCross Prestige Series here in Southern California. It was a ton of work and required serious time. I would do it again. The High Desert Cyclists stepped up and help out in a huge way and together we all made it happen!!
