So, this afternoon I stopped off at the local Ralph’s in Chatsworth on my way to the Encino Velodrome. I grabbed my items and headed for the Express Lane. Express Lane, as in fast checkout. Lo and behold a middle-aged woman, not necessarily elderly, but no spring chicken, whips out her checkbook to pay for her groceries. The sign clearly states 15 items or less, ATM Credit or Cash…nothing about checks. Now things get dramatic. The checker remains silent and oblivious like most of them do at this store. As the customer fumbles with her DL trying to slide it through the terminal to verify her ID the checker tries to assist. The customer proceeds to attempt to slide the card through the reader in every possible way but the correct way. Don’t get me wrong, I have patience, lots of it. But this was really chapping me. As all of this went down I was able to calmly get my BlackBerry out and throw up a quick post on Facebook. Perhaps the customer was new to the area or the USA? Who knows. Once she got done and moved along the line went really fast, just as intended.
In re: to checks. I have literally only written 3 checks in 10 years. They’re an old deal, time to say buh-bye. This is 2009, we should all be able to get beyond paper checks!!!
